Pearl Patrol
The Pearl Patrol launched just a month ago and has been going strong, with up to 15 scheduled walks per week. Volunteers walk in small groups, serving as community ambassadors, public safety advocates, and as helpful “eyes and ears” on the streets of the district. New volunteers are needed to join this friendly and convivial group.
Volunteers choose from scheduled walks in the morning, afternoon, or evening. Some participants do one walk or more every week, others do once a month. The schedule is published every weekend for the coming week, and volunteers sign up easily online, according to their availability. Vests and other supplies are provided. The principal activity is to observe report issues, whether trespassing, graffiti, tents, drug use or dealing, trash, etc. Optional activities while walking may include trash pickup and light outreach to the homeless, depending on the preferences and comfort level of each volunteer.
