Tom Harvey Celebration of Life at Portland State University

Portland State University’s Geography Department is having a gathering on Monday, Feb. 10th , 4:30-6:30 p.m. to honor Dr. Tom Harvey. It will be at Smith Center on campus, Room 238/Browsing Lounge.  (Smith Center faces the South Park Blocks and is about 1 block south from the Streetcar line’s Park Blocks stop).

 

The celebration is open to all. Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served and Caitlin’s preparing a backdrop Power Point with lots of Tom’s photos that will cycle through. One of the speakers is Tony Goddard, with whom Tom attended grad school at the U. of Minnesota. Tom and Tony then worked together at St. Paul (MN) City Planning.

 

Tom was born to Martha (White) Harvey Chinnery and the late Andrew Frank Harvey Jr., on Sept. 13, 1951, in Tupelo, Miss. Tom graduated from Tupelo High School in 1969. He received a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Antioch College in 1974, an M.S. in Geography from The Pennsylvania State University in 1982 and a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He married Jean Ellen Spraker of Wilmington, Del., on July 27, 1974, in Cooperstown, N.Y.

 

Tom was a professor of geography at Portland State University until his passing. His academic interests were in urban geography, urban planning, cultural landscape studies and the geography of North America.Previously, he worked as a city planner for the City of St. Paul, Minn., and for the Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society.

 

In Portland, Tom was an active member of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association from 1995 and, most recently, served as a board member on the association’s Design Review Committee.

 

Tom is survived by his wife, Jean Spraker of Portland; daughter, Caitlin Harvey of Glen Allen, Va.; mother, Martha Chinnery of Sun City Center, Fla.; and brother, Andrew “Drew” Harvey of Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in his honor to the Mississippi Main Street Association, 308 E. Pearl St., Suite 101, Jackson, MS 39201 or the Pearl District Neighborhood Association, 2257 N.W. Raleigh St., Portland, OR 97210.
