News from Friends of Mounted Patrol

The Friends of Portland’s Mounted Patrol wishes to thank EVERYONE for their tremendous support in the effort to keep the Mounted Patrol funded next fiscal year. The fact that the MPU gathered nearly 2,000 Facebook friends in just a few weeks has not gone unnoticed at City Hall!!!

You all need to know that, without any publicity, the Friends’ Board recently offered the City a grant of $100,000 to help keep the MPU going next fiscal year. We also told the city that were willing to initiate an aggressive, community based fund raising effort to help defray some of the MPU’s future, on-going costs. This would include logo merchandise sales, fund raising events, direct solicitations etc. We communicated these offers to Police Commissioner Saltzman’s staff in a meeting last week. Apparently our offer was not sufficient to influence the Mayor’s decision to disband the unit.

Nevertheless, we will continue our effort to save the MPU by providing testimony at the City Council’s upcoming public budget hearings. A large show of support at the hearings would be very helpful! As soon as we know the schedule for these hearings, we will let everyone know. In the mean time, keep those letters of support rolling into the Mayor and City Council Offices! THANKS!
