Good Fences

Of the various hot spots for criminal activity in the Pearl District, the planter box area of the Eco Trust building along 11th Avenue was near the top of the list. Nearly two years ago, the PDNA Friends of the Pearl Foot Patrol, led by the persistence of its leader, Michael Roberts, began advocating with the building’s owner to create a barrier to help prevent this behavior.

Now, the building owner has finally responded by installing a fence (still awaiting painting) across the entire span of the planters where people would hang out drinking alcohol, dealing drugs and intimidating passersby. While there is no guarantee this will stop all illegal activity, it is a step in the right direction and an example of what can be done at a grass roots level when neighbors in a community come together to improve livability for all.
