Fortunately, Oregon has not experienced natural disasters like hurricanes Sandy (2012) and Katrina (2005). While long-time residents may remember the Columbus Day windstorm of 1962, the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980, and the Flood of 1996 that nearly crested Portland’s seawall, most Portlanders feel little reason to think about the importance of disaster preparedness.
There are a number of specific hazards about which Portland residents and property and business owners should be aware.
The City of Portland’s Bureau of Emergency Management’s (PBEM) website provides information about these hazards: http://www.portlandoregon.gov/pbem/59353
