Report Graffiti with City iPhone App

Friday, August 13th, 2010

For those of you who are tech savy and have an iPhone, their is an easy way to help us report new graffiti to the city through City of Portland Citizen Reports. It is a free iPhone app developed by the city of Portland’s Bureau of Technology Services.

City of Portland Citizen Reports is a new way to interact with the city concerning problems or issues with publicly maintained infrastructure. The application is compatible with any model of iPhone running iPhone OS 3.1.2 or higher and may be downloaded for free from iTunes. Note: The link will only work on computers that have a current version of Apple’s iTunes software installed.

Our goal is to get a group of people trained on how to use the city app and to go on walks around the neighborhood to help the city document new graffiti incidents.

The app is extremely useful to the city because it takes a picture of the offending graffiti, locates the exact GPS location of the graffiti, and the report is properly filed and stored in the city database and records office.

For details on how to use this app go to the Bureau of Technology Services website.

If you are interested in going on a group walk with some of your fellow neighbors with iPhones and City of Portland Citizen Reports iPhone App email:

Pearl board accepts 24-hour Loo at Jamison

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Article From NW Examiner, written By Allan Classen.

After considering alternatives to a 24-hour Portland Loo at Jamison Square for almost a year, it seems the community really never had any options.

The Pearl District Neighborhood Association voted to accept the city’s specially designed public toilet last month, despite about 10 other ideas offered by neighbors at a meeting attended by 70 people two days earlier.

Sandy Ammerman, the primary spokesperson for neighbors opposing the Loo, said the board’s decision “was a foregone conclusion” affirming a PDNA position taken last year.

Although residents of condominium buildings surrounding the park insisted that these other options be explored, none of their suggestions came with the requisite funding and authorization from the affected property owners. Some neighbors favored doing nothing, but the idea of providing no means of relief for the thousands of children and adults who flock to the park’s popular water feature was unthinkable to most board members.

Stripped of euphemism and generality, the objections centered on fear that an overnight restroom would be used by homeless people and lead to a clustering of anti-social behaviors that would make the area feel unwelcome or unsafe.

“If you build it, they will come,” said Sheila McCoy, a PDNA board member who lives in the Streetcar Lofts. McCoy said she hears people pushing shopping carts past her windows until 3 a.m., suggesting to her that it would not take a strong magnet to cause them to congregate in or around the park.

“You’re absolutely right,” said Officer Carl Weldon, who has tracked behavior around the city’s first Loo, located on Northwest Glisan by the bus station. Weldon said he has found drug paraphernalia in and around that Loo, and arrests are high in the vicinity, although he admitted that it is impossible to separate the public restroom from other contributing factors in the vicinity.

However, Portland Police Chief Mike Reese has said he considers the Loo experiment on Glisan Street a success. “It is my opinion that the Loo makes sense in Jamison…

New Park Signs at Tanner Springs Park

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

As an added touch to Tanner Springs Park just in time for summer are some new signs that display some information about the history of the park and about the mini eco system. It’s a reminder to people to help the park thrive on its own since it was built on a former industrial site by asking people to keep their pets out of the park and only walk on the lawn and stone path.

As a resident near this park I am glad the signs have been put up as well as the the improvements. Tanner Springs Park is like a little oasis in the middle of an urban setting, and it’s nice to see people enjoy the park at all times of the year. Hopefully you will enjoy the park this summer too, and check out those nice new signs.

Livability Reports on Graffiti

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

During the last year, many of our Pearl District neighbors have reported their concern about the escalation of graffiti incidents in our neighborhood. In response, the Pearl District Neighborhood Association’s Livability Committee is preparing to launch a special project: Graffiti Abatement. This has not been done previously in the Pearl. Our goal is to “Change the Face of the Pearl”.

In order to accomplish this task, our first step is to form a volunteer task force. So we are contacting you to ask you if you will help us by becoming a “Graffiti Buster” team member! Training and all materials will be provided. We have a “Graffiti Buster” vest ready just for you. And as always in our ‘hood, we welcome our citizen-children along with their parents.

Our first graffiti abatement “practice event” is slated for Sunday, June 13th, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. There will be an “after party” lunch and raffle for all volunteers at Rogue Ale.

The second event will be a “Neighborhood-Wide Graffiti Clean Up” on Saturday, July 10th @ 9:00 a.m. We hope to be experienced pro’s for this event, which will be supported by the City of Portland and Commissioner Amanda Fritz. Again, we will “party” after.

Will you help us make the change? We’d love to hear from you, either by email or phone.

Sincerely,

Jan Valentine

Pooches In The Pearl Event

Friday, April 30th, 2010

When: Saturday May 22, 2010 @ 1-4pm
Where: The Encore, NW 10th & Overton
What: Pooches in the Pearl has been a long time coming. Many residents of the Pearl District own dogs as Portland is a dog friendly city. The Pearl District Neighborhood Association will also be showcasing a new pet station which will be on display at the event. The association has purchased 25 of these stations which will be going up all over our neighborhood in the next month or so to alleviate the gap in stations around town.

The event takes place at The Encore at NW 10th and Overton on Saturday May 22 from 1-4pm right next the Fields Park. This event was put together by the Pearl District Neighborhood Association’s Livability Committee and is being supported by our local businesses.

Pearl District

The livability committee has published an extensive position paper titled “Trash In The Pearl”. It’s composed of several livability issues in the Pearl District which include trash, cigarette butts, pets in the Pearl, and graffiti. Each section of the position paper contains a recommendation put together by the committee and approved by the board. Please feel free to download, read, and distribute.

The goal of this study is to materially improve some components which impact livability in the Pearl District. This includes reduction of undesirable waste by providing conveniently located trash receptacles, pet waste stations, and cigarette disposal boxes throughout the Pearl District, as well as more effective graffiti abatement. The aim is to provide for sustainable maintenance of these through a shared public/private partnership made up of residents, businesses, and the City of Portland…

Save the Mounted Police Patrol

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

mounted horse patrolIf you love the Mounted Police Unit, please write the City Council, the Mayor, the Portland Police Chief, and the Portland Central Precinct. With the current recession, the city of Portland is facing budget cuts, and unfortunately the Mounted Patrol Unit is being looked at for cuts.

In December 2009, the Pearl District Neighborhood Association made a motion and approved to write a letter of support for the MPU. They are a good asset to the community and an important aspect of our neighborhood and city. If the Mounted Patrol Unit is cut, the Pearl District will not feel the same without them.

A letter dated Jan 2nd was sent to the Police Chief to express neighborhood support for MPU. Steve Trujillo, president of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, who was involved in the budget talks, says he hopes the mounted unit is saved again. “We love the MPU,” Trujillo said. “It’s got a unique role.”
