The Portland Bureau of Transportation distributed a truck traffic advisory today that said the Broadway Bridge will close to trucks and large vehicles for 13 months beginning Monday, May 10. The four-lane bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction with 12-foot height clearance due to streetcar construction.

Trucks and large vehicles that cannot meet the temporary height limit of 12 feet must use detours, such as recommended routes that take eastbound trucks over the Fremont Bridge and westbound trucks over the Burnside Bridge. The middle lanes of the bridge will be closed, shifting traffic to the lower clearance outside lanes.

Drivers of passenger vehicles and cars not affected by the temporary 12-foot height restriction are advised to expect delays on the Broadway Bridge and use alternate routes through July 5. Drivers should also expect delays on Broadway, Weidler and Lovejoy in the vicinity of the bridge.

Pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained during the current phase of construction. The traveling public is advised to always use caution in construction zones.

In addition, the Broadway Bridge will close to all auto/truck traffic for two nights on Monday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 11, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Beginning July 6, the Broadway Bridge is scheduled to be closed to all vehicles until September 3. These construction dates are subject to change. More information will be coming in the months ahead.

The Friends of Portland’s Mounted Patrol wishes to thank EVERYONE for their tremendous support in the effort to keep the Mounted Patrol funded next fiscal year. The fact that the MPU gathered nearly 2,000 Facebook friends in just a few weeks has not gone unnoticed at City Hall!!!

You all need to know that, without any publicity, the Friends’ Board recently offered the City a grant of $100,000 to help keep the MPU going next fiscal year. We also told the city that were willing to initiate an aggressive, community based fund raising effort to help defray some of the MPU’s future, on-going costs. This would include logo merchandise sales, fund raising events, direct solicitations etc. We communicated these offers to Police Commissioner Saltzman’s staff in a meeting last week. Apparently our offer was not sufficient to influence the Mayor’s decision to disband the unit.

Nevertheless, we will continue our effort to save the MPU by providing testimony at the City Council’s upcoming public budget hearings. A large show of support at the hearings would be very helpful! As soon as we know the schedule for these hearings, we will let everyone know. In the mean time, keep those letters of support rolling into the Mayor and City Council Offices! THANKS!
