Friday, May 28th, 2010Broadway Bridge Closed for Trucks for next 13 Months
Sunday, May 16th, 2010The Portland Bureau of Transportation distributed a truck traffic advisory today that said the Broadway Bridge will close to trucks and large vehicles for 13 months beginning Monday, May 10. The four-lane bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction with 12-foot height clearance due to streetcar construction.
Trucks and large vehicles that cannot meet the temporary height limit of 12 feet must use detours, such as recommended routes that take eastbound trucks over the Fremont Bridge and westbound trucks over the Burnside Bridge. The middle lanes of the bridge will be closed, shifting traffic to the lower clearance outside lanes.
Drivers of passenger vehicles and cars not affected by the temporary 12-foot height restriction are advised to expect delays on the Broadway Bridge and use alternate routes through July 5. Drivers should also expect delays on Broadway, Weidler and Lovejoy in the vicinity of the bridge.
Pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained during the current phase of construction. The traveling public is advised to always use caution in construction zones.
In addition, the Broadway Bridge will close to all auto/truck traffic for two nights on Monday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 11, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Beginning July 6, the Broadway Bridge is scheduled to be closed to all vehicles until September 3. These construction dates are subject to change. More information will be coming in the months ahead.

News from Friends of Mounted Patrol
Sunday, May 16th, 2010The Friends of Portland’s Mounted Patrol wishes to thank EVERYONE for their tremendous support in the effort to keep the Mounted Patrol funded next fiscal year. The fact that the MPU gathered nearly 2,000 Facebook friends in just a few weeks has not gone unnoticed at City Hall!!!
You all need to know that, without any publicity, the Friends’ Board recently offered the City a grant of $100,000 to help keep the MPU going next fiscal year. We also told the city that were willing to initiate an aggressive, community based fund raising effort to help defray some of the MPU’s future, on-going costs. This would include logo merchandise sales, fund raising events, direct solicitations etc. We communicated these offers to Police Commissioner Saltzman’s staff in a meeting last week. Apparently our offer was not sufficient to influence the Mayor’s decision to disband the unit.
Nevertheless, we will continue our effort to save the MPU by providing testimony at the City Council’s upcoming public budget hearings. A large show of support at the hearings would be very helpful! As soon as we know the schedule for these hearings, we will let everyone know. In the mean time, keep those letters of support rolling into the Mayor and City Council Offices! THANKS!

Livability Reports on Graffiti
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010During the last year, many of our Pearl District neighbors have reported their concern about the escalation of graffiti incidents in our neighborhood. In response, the Pearl District Neighborhood Association’s Livability Committee is preparing to launch a special project: Graffiti Abatement. This has not been done previously in the Pearl. Our goal is to “Change the Face of the Pearl”.
In order to accomplish this task, our first step is to form a volunteer task force. So we are contacting you to ask you if you will help us by becoming a “Graffiti Buster” team member! Training and all materials will be provided. We have a “Graffiti Buster” vest ready just for you. And as always in our ‘hood, we welcome our citizen-children along with their parents.
Our first graffiti abatement “practice event” is slated for Sunday, June 13th, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. There will be an “after party” lunch and raffle for all volunteers at Rogue Ale.
The second event will be a “Neighborhood-Wide Graffiti Clean Up” on Saturday, July 10th @ 9:00 a.m. We hope to be experienced pro’s for this event, which will be supported by the City of Portland and Commissioner Amanda Fritz. Again, we will “party” after.
Will you help us make the change? We’d love to hear from you, either by email or phone.
Sincerely,
Jan Valentine
